Welcome to “birdtherock”

This site is the beginning of something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. It’s much more than a blog – it’s an information center about birds and birding in Newfoundland (Canada), geared towards both local birders and those planning/wishing to visit from abroad. For now, I’ve added a few features that you might find helpful, but I’m hoping to add more. So … explore, and let me know what you think.

I do intend to keep the blog updated with a mix of my own birding adventures and news about recent sightings around the province. Here are a few features available so far:

Rarity Round-up: A brief update on notable rarities that are being seen around the province …

Seasonal Summaries: I’ve been compiling a summary of bird records and highlights for each season for a few years now. Check ’em out …

Winter List: Birders in many parts of Canada have been keeping provincial “winter bird lists” for a while now, and I’ve been doing it for Newfoundland since 2006.

Checklist of the Birds of Newfoundland: An “unofficial” (but up-to-date) checklist of birds recorded on the island of Newfoundland, including their general status and abundance.

I’ve got some ideas for new features to be added in the future. Do you? Let me know.
