American Flamingo

Phoenicopterus ruber

Status: Unconfirmed

Origins: Breeds in South America, parts of Mexico and the Caribbean, with regular sightings in Florida.

Record Details: In what may be one of the most bizarre bird records for Newfoundland, one of two flamingos were shot by a hunter at Horse Islands on the north coast on November 7, 1977.  ** This record was removed from the official Checklist of the Birds of Insular Newfoundland in 2016 due to questionable provenance **
