Bridled Tern

Onychoprion anaethetus

Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)

Origins: Breeds along the Atlantic coast of Mexico, the Caribbean and western Africa, wintering mostly in the tropical ocean. Most records in the north Atlantic are following hurricanes and/or tropical storms.

Record Details: Three records for Newfoundland – the first was reportedly shot near Cuslett (Placentia Bay) on the very unusual date of January 21, 1891; the other was an immature bird studied in Fermeuse (southeast Avalon Peninsula) from September 6-7, 1955. More recently, the remains of one bird were found during a Beach Bird Survey in Point LaHaye in the 1980’s (precise year TBD).
