Cooper’s Hawk

Accipiter cooperii

Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)

Origins: Breeds across southern Canada (west of the Atlantic provinces) and the United States.

Record Details: One individual was described by a prominent and experienced birder in St. John’s on January 28, 1979 while other historical records and more recent reports have not been well documented. The lack of photos or specimens, and the extreme similarity to other more expected accipiter species, make all records difficult to confirm.
