Falco subbuteo
Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)
Origins: Widespread across Europe, Asia and Africa. Northern birds are highly migratory, wintering in Asia and Africa.
Record Details: One or two records for Newfoundland. The first accepted record for North America was an individual that landed on a vessel ~300nm off the east coast in May 1989 – it may not have been in “official” Newfoundland waters. Another was well described at Cape Spear (near St. John’s) on May 26, 2004 but only observed by one person. Other intriguing but unconfirmed descriptions have arisen over the past few years.
