Gull-billed Tern

Gelochelidon nilotica

Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)

Origins: Widespread in temperate regions, breeding in southern Europe, both coasts of North America (south of New England), eastern South America, Asia and Australia.

Record Details: Six records (of at least nine individuals) for Newfoundland, with the bulk having occurred as part of a single event in September 2019 (see below). (1) The first was at Renews on July 9, 2003. (2) One was at St. Vincent’s following Hurricane Wilma from November 1-6, 2005. (3-6) At least seven individuals were reported from Stephenville Crossing, Codroy Provincial Park, JT Cheeseman Provincial Park and Pasadena in the days following Hurricane Dorian (September 8-12, 2019).
