Magnificent Frigatebird

Fregata magnificens

Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)

Origins: Widespread in the tropical Atlantic from Cape Verde to the Caribbean and parts of Florida. It also breeds on the Pacific coast from Mexico to Ecuador.

Record Details: Three confirmed records for Newfoundland, including a male specimen from Bonavista Bay in 1932. Other records were from Ramea on June 4, 1999 and one photographed near Lamaline on September 14, 2002. I am still tracking down details of an individual photographed on a fishing vessel off Port-aux-Basques on November 8, 2020. Another frigatebird sp.(presumably Magnificent) was photographed off Logy Bay on August 9, 2021.
