Newfoundland & Labrador’s second record of Red-headed Woodpecker was this immature, frequenting several feeders and yards in O’Regans, Codroy Valley on November 12 & 13, 2020. (Photo: Eric Pike; November 13, 2020)

Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)

Origins: Occurs across central and eastern United States, breeding just into portions of southern Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. It is a rare but regular visitor to the Maritime provinces.

Record Details: Two records for Newfoundland. (1) The first was an immature bird visiting a feeder in the Waterford Valley, St. John’s from October 21 – November 2, 1991. (2) An immature bird was spotted visiting several yards/feeders in O’Regans, Codroy Valley on November 12-13, 2020.
