Dendrocygna autumnalis
Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)
Origins: A large whistling duck that occurs commonly throughout mush of South and Central America. Their range has expanded into the southern United States in recent years, with a large smattering of records throughout the eastern United States and a few in southeastern Canada.
Record Details: Two records for Newfoundland. Provenance is uncertain, but the records fit with recent increases in records in northeastern North America. (1) The first record occurred when three birds were photographed at a river mouth in Patrick’s Cove (southwestern Avalon) on May 19, 2016. The birds were not seen again. (2) More recently a flock of eleven were photographed in flight, on a beach and even on a house roof (not unusual behaviour for this species) in Birchy Bay, Notre Dame Bay on May 14, 2022. These birds were also never relocated.
