Pelecanus erythrorhynchos
Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)
Origins: Breeds in the interior of North America and winters along the coast of the southern United States and Mexico as far as Central America.
Record Details: Three or four records for Newfoundland. (1) Newfoundland’s first was photographed near Raleigh (Great Northern Peninsula) in late June 1983. (2) Another was seen sporadically in Lethbridge, Bonavista Bay ~July 29 – August 11, 2003. Presumably the same bird spent a day or two at nearby Sunnyside in early August of the that year. (3) There is also a single-observer report of one flying past Cape Race on August 1, 2003. (4) Most recently, one was well photographed by an observer at Roddickton harbour (Great Northern Peninsula) ~May 20, 2012 and shown during a provincial TV newscast. It was last reported there on May 22, 2012. Presumably the same bird was then was spotted at Biscay Bay on the southeast Avalon on May 30-31, Come By Chance on June 1, and Lamaline, Burin Peninsula on June 3-4, 2012.
