King Rail

Rallus elegans

Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)

Origins: Breeds in marshes across much of the eastern United States.

Record Details: One to three records for Newfoundland. A specimen was collected in St. John’s on October 20, 1935 (later lost in a fire), while a large rail best fitting this species was observed at Cape Race on October 12, 1996. Another large, unidentified rail in St. Shott’s on October 26, 2014 was considered by observers to most likely be a King Rail.
